Community Dialogue #DoubleAdaptationFinance Make it Accessible, Flexible, Predictable

KENYA 3 September 2023 Events
Global Center on Adaptation

Event description

The Africa Climate Summit will take place in Nairobi, Kenya, from 4–6 September 2023. The Summit is expected to bring together leaders, experts, and policymakers from across the world to discuss the pressing issue of climate change and its impact on Africa. It will focus on key climate-related priority areas for Africa, including climate finance.

Kenya is a leader in supporting Locally Led Adaptation (LLA) in Africa. The national Constitution devolves power to 47 county governments, with the direct election of county-level leaders. Local governments can therefore work with local communities as equal partners, to pioneer LLA approaches – such as the Special Planning Area process for devolved planning in Mukuru, which was the basis for the GCA’s Guide for building climate resilience in informal settlements; and the County Climate Change Funds model, which won a GCA Local Adaptation Champions Award in 2022. Both these efforts are already influencing solutions that the GCA is implementing with International Finance Institutions in countries like Liberia, Senegal, and Rwanda.

Organized a day before the Africa Climate Summit, the Community Dialogue will seek inputs from community members, on how adaptation finance can not only be doubled by 2025, but also be made more accessible by communities, and flexible and predictable to address their needs more effectively.

The key objective of the Community Dialogue will be to develop a Statement from rural and urban poor communities, calling on leaders participating in the Africa Climate Summit to make adaptation finance work for the most vulnerable.
